It’s about time amiright?! I have been wanting to make a paleo BBQ sauce to have on my blog for awhile but I was trying to make it work with dates – aka whole30 compliant. But when I tested this version with honey and coconut sugar I knew it was the one I needed to share! I might share a whole30 version in the future but thats only 30 days of your life… and this BBQ sauce will be your new favorite forever!! I know it’s so hard to part from your beloved Sweet Baby Rays – trust me, that stuff is LEGIT. But I realized I love it so much because it’s packed with sugar – and not just even regular sugar – high fructose corn syrup! I know i know you are probably thinking, “I didn’t think it was even legal to put that in food anymore!!” Well it is, and tons of people still do it. And because I am not one to be shy with the amount of BBQ sauce I’ll put on my ribs or chicken, I knew I had to make a cleaner version that I would love. Another big factor for me? SPICE. Or lack there of I should say. I am not a huge fan of spicy stuff so I left out too much of that, but I do love the smoky flavor so I added that in with liquid smoke and smoked paprika.
Another thing I love adding BBQ sauce too is pizza!! We make pizza with Simple Mills pizza crust mix all the time and BBQ chicken pizza is the jam. It’s my #2 fave kind of pizza after a good Hawaiian. Okay now I could go on and on about all the ways I use BBQ sauce – like mixing it with a little ranch dressing and making BBQ chicken salad…. BUT I will just get to the recipe which is kind of why you are here!
Okay sorry but before you go I also just wanted to tell you that I talked to the TYLER FLORENCE today!! Yes the Tyler Florence from Food Network!! He has a podcast and he interviewed me today about sweet potato toast/ how I get creative in the kitchen. I am so excited about it and will be sure to link you to the podcast when it is live!! Paleo BBQ Sauce
- 1 (15 oz.) can tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
- ¼ cup honey
- 2 tablespoons coconut sugar
- 1/4 cup tomato paste
- 2 tablespoons coconut aminos
- ¼ teaspoons ground mustard seed
- ½ teaspoons onion powder
- ⅛ teaspoons cinnamon
- 2 tsp. liquid smoke*
- 1 tsp. smoked paprika
- 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp. freshly-ground black pepper
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a low boil just until heated through and coconut sugar is dissolved.
- Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks
- *Look for the all natural Liquid Smoke!
