The holidays are here which means we need to make room for all the desserts and these Sugar Cookies need to be top of the list. This Sugar Cookie recipe has been in my family for generations and comes out perfectly every time! Sugar Cookies!!! There are many similar yet different sugar cookie recipes out there, but let me tell you, use this one!  I may be biased because these are the cookies I grew up with, but they are just the perfect amount of soft and crispy that you need in a cookie.  They are especially good for decorating.  I made a batch and had some friends over for cookie decorating fun!  Complete with Hot Cocoa Bar!

This Sugar Cookie recipe has been in my family for generations and comes out perfectly every time!

Every year growing up we would have a baking day where us girls would help roll the cookie dough out, use a million different cookie cutters and I’m sure would make a complete mess. After all the cookies were baked we would get to decorate them all. I have VERY vivid memories of a stocking and candlestick that was notorious for breaking before we could decorate it. Thinking back about what we decorated our cookies with, we never really used sprinkles or things like that, we only had the frosting. Our very own secret recipe of powder sugar and water may be milk which we would add food coloring to. Obviously we had 5-8 different bowls with all the colors of the rainbow. I was talking with my mom the other day while making these cookies again and I asked her where this recipe came from. Many of the baking recipes we used growing up were passed down from my mom’s grandmother Lilian Upward, a baker from the homeland of England.  The recipe makes an insane amount of dough, so just remember you can freeze some of the dough if you don’t plan on baking them all at one. Just make sure you tightly wrap the dough in saran wrap so they stay fresh. Let me know what cookie cutters you are using for your cookies this year and any fun topping you are adding, Enjoy!! Sugar Cookies

Description

This Sugar Cookie recipe has been in my family for generations and comes out perfectly every time!


Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 5 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 cups softened butter (3 sticks)
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 Tablespoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Sift together flour, baking powder & salt in bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl cream together butter and sugar and beat until light and fluffy.
  3. Blend in eggs & vanilla.
  4. Add dry ingredients. Mix well.
  5. Wrap dough in wax paper and/or plastic wrap, and chill in refridgerator over night.
  6. Roll out and sprinkle with flour.
  7. Bake at 400 degrees for 6-8 minutes. (6 for softer cookies, 8 for crispier)

Sugar Cookie Icing

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 tbsp milk
  • 1 tbsp light corn syrup

Instructions

  • Combine all of the ingredients in a bowl. Start with the 2 tablespoons of milk and add more if needed to get the consistency you want.  Add food coloring if you would like it colored.
  • The corn syrup can be left out but it helps make it look glossy and nice.

Notes

  • The consistency you want might depend on how you are putting it on the cookie. If you use a piping bag or spread it with a knife it can be thicker, but if you dunk it, a bit thinner is nice!

  1. Can you make this ahead of time and freeze the dough or how long ahead of time can you make the dough will it keep in the refrigerator. I want to bake some cookies on the 23rd .

  2. I haven’t baked these yet, but I just sampled the batter before putting it in the fridge, and it’s divine! Can wait to bake them with the kiddos today!






  3. I made these cookies today and followed the instructions exactly, except I only let the dough chill for probably 4 hours. It was still easy to work with, held it’s shape after baking, and tastes delicious *chef’s kiss*.
    Saving this recipe for all future sugar cookie making. 

  4. The perfect sugar cookie recipe! These are so good and hold their shape. I halved the recipe because we didn’t need as many as the recipe called for and they still worked great. 

  5. I find some sugar cookies to taste odd for an unknown reason so I’m picky about them. I just tried this recipe on Christmas Eve and I loved it! I like a soft cookie so I made the cookies a little thick. I didn’t have time to wait to chill overnight so I rolled the dough out flat between 2 parchment sheets and chilled in the freezer for an hour instead then cut and it worked perfectly! Thank you!

  6. These were awesome! Accidentally left the dough in the fridge for a few days — sick kids. Then let the dough sit out about an hour before rolling it. They were fluffy and yum.
